Gorin Bunko
Gorin Bunko
What's Gorin Bunko?
It is the library of school books which have been used in primary education (including junior high school after World War II) since the educational system was established in 1872.
You will certaily find some dear books you used.
Bunko are furthermore collecting the books of Tokugawa Era used at "Terakoya"and foreign school books used in primary schools.
Gorin Bunko was started by Mr.Kiichiro Ito a headmaster of Onjuku Primary School in 1892 in order to make a comparative study of the school books. He had realized the importance of the primary education for children who are required to meet expectation in their generation.
Mr.Ito felt keenly that in order to realize happiness with the rest of the world, it is imperative for children to learn when they are innocent.
He decided to collect school books of both Japan and foreign countries, and to make a comparative study of books after World War I(1914〜1918).
We find his thought farsighted after knowing how miserable was the World War II.
The origin of name "Gorin Bunko"
Onjuku Primary School was destroyed by big typhoon in 1902. At the time Onjuku was a small and poor village with 850 houses. It was impossible for the village itself to reconstruct the school because Japan was under the war with Russia. Children without the school had to learn at several temples.
Headmaster Kiichiro Ito and Mayor Keijiro Shikida persuaded all of households to save 5rin (gorin)every day for the benefit of their children. All people approved the idea and started the project from May 1908. They doubled the saving amount from 1912 to 1914 and no one left the project during 9 years. With more than 30,000yen the new school was built up on the land of 737tubos.
Major General Zenji Kuroda of Sakura Regimental Commander happened to visit Onjuku and he got impressed to know the above anecdote and presented to the village his handwriting of "Gorin-ou".
Since then Onjuku Primary School had been called Onjuku Gorinou Primary School.
Our library also named "Gorin".
Thanks to our ancestors, Onjuku Machi is well known as an educational town throughout not only Chiba pref. but the whole country.
